Squire Farsyde Port reminds how the local gentry, the Farsyde family of Thorpe Hall, were probably involved in funding and supporting smuggling activity. Thorpe Hall in Fylingthorpe, half a mile from Robin Hood’s Bay, had a special pit built to hide smuggled goods and it can still be seen today.

Description

It’s common knowledge that the rich gentry funded and or at least benefitted from smuggling. The Farsydes have been in the locality since the 1600s. Their home at Thorpe Hall has a purpose built underground store.  It would have made a handy drop off point for smuggled goods.
